A year ago I only ever said one of these out loud: SEO. Now my inbox is full of people asking about AEO and GEO too, usually with a slightly panicked “do I need to learn three things now?” If the SEO vs AEO vs GEO acronym soup has you feeling behind, take a breath. It’s far simpler than it looks.
Here’s the whole thing in one sentence: these aren’t three separate jobs, they’re three layers of the same one. SEO got you ranked. AEO gets you into answer boxes. GEO gets you quoted by AI. Same foundations underneath, three different places your content can show up.
Let me define each properly, show how they overlap, and tell you where to actually put your energy. For the deep version of the newest layer, my generative engine optimization guide goes further.

SEO, AEO, GEO — quick definitions
SEO (search engine optimization) is the original: optimizing so your page ranks in the classic list of blue links. Twenty years old and still the foundation.
AEO (answer engine optimization) is optimizing to win the direct answer — featured snippets, the “People also ask” box, voice-assistant replies. The goal is to be the answer, not just a link.
GEO (generative engine optimization) is the newest: optimizing so AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews cite your content when they generate an answer.
The difference at a glance
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page | Win the answer box | Get cited by AI |
| Shows up in | Classic results | Snippets & PAA | AI-generated answers |
| Optimizes for | Keywords & links | Direct, concise answers | Trust & quotability |
| Age | ~20 years | Several years | Brand new |
How much do they actually overlap?
A lot — which is the part that should relax you. All three reward the same core things: content that genuinely helps, clear structure, real expertise, and a trustworthy site. Answer a question clearly and concisely near the top of a well-structured page, and you’ve just helped your SEO, your AEO, and your GEO at the same time. You’re not doing triple the work; you’re doing the same good work and getting credit in three places.
Do you need to do all three?
Eventually, yes — but not equally, and not all at once. They stack in order. SEO is the foundation: if your page can’t be crawled and doesn’t rank, it won’t win answer boxes or get cited by AI either. AEO builds on it by sharpening how you answer. GEO sits on top, earning citations in AI results. Skip the base and the upper layers have nothing to stand on.
What’s actually changed in search
The reason these new acronyms appeared at all is that the results page changed. AI summaries now sit above the classic links for many queries, and a growing number of people ask AI tools directly instead of using a search box. So “being visible” no longer means just ranking — it means showing up in the answer too. The acronyms are new; the underlying goal, getting found by the people you can help, is exactly the same.
What to focus on first
If you’re starting out, here’s the honest priority order. Nail SEO first — the fundamentals in my SEO for a new website guide are still the floor everything builds on. Then layer in answer-first writing, which serves AEO and GEO together; that’s exactly what I cover in optimizing content for AI search. Do those two well and you’re already ahead of most sites on all three fronts.
Frequently asked questions
What’s the difference between SEO, AEO, and GEO?
SEO aims to rank a page in classic results, AEO aims to win the direct answer box, and GEO aims to get your content cited inside AI-generated answers. They’re layers of the same goal: being found.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. GEO sits on top of SEO and depends on it. AI engines still pull from pages that rank and can be crawled, so strong SEO remains the foundation.
Which should I focus on first?
SEO. It’s the base layer, and most AEO and GEO best practices grow naturally out of doing SEO well. Add answer-first writing next, which covers AEO and GEO together.
Do I need different content for each?
Usually not. One well-structured, genuinely helpful page that answers clearly can serve all three. You’re optimizing the same content for more places, not creating three versions.
